Beskop Tshechu, the first documentary and short film festival in Bhutan, begins today at the Royal Thai Pavilion in Thimphu at 6:00 pm.The film festival will screen short fiction films and documentaries made by Bhutanese as well as a few foreign films.

According to the organizing committee, the festival is aimed at promoting and encouraging creative filmmaking in the country. To commemorate the historic royal wedding, the films will be screened free.

Khamsum, a short film by 31 year-old Loday Chophel, an aspiring filmmaker, won the first prize during the October 21-23 Beskop Tshechu in Thimphu.The 22 minute and 30 seconds film tells the story of Khamsum, a young boy who is in coma. His mind leaves his body and leads his father, who he has never met, to the hospital bed where he lies unconscious.

Khamsum takes his father for a tour to his mother’s house. The father then comes to know who Khamsum really is – his son from his one-time girlfriend. He also finds out that she is already dead. Human foible is shown here in the film by the man who impregnates his girlfriend and leaves her. Continue reading

Come October, a short film festival called Beskop Tshechu will be held in Thimphu from 21 to 23 to promote and encourage non-commercial filmmaking in Bhutan.
The festival is an opportunity for Bhutanese filmmakers to express and enjoy the craft without any commercial pressure. The festival will screen short films and documentaries made by Bhutanese. The maximum length of a film is 25 minutes and minimum can be one minute.

When we think of documentary production in Bhutan, we think of Ugyen Wangdi. In many ways, he is the father of documentary in Bhutan. One of the first trained filmmakers in Bhutan, with 3 years at the Film Institute in Pune, Ugyen Wangdi is also our first feature filmmaker. With Gasa Lama Singye, shot on film, in 1989, Wangdi began his notable career in story-telling.

Beskop Tshechu Accustomed to watching feature and commercial films apart from usual soaps, art-based films failed to captivate Bhutanese audience, who flocked to watch it at the ‘Beskop Tshechu’ yesterday.
Around six short films were screened at the Vast gallery last evening in one of Bhutan’s first short film and documentary film festival.

His film, Khamsum, was among seven Bhutanese films in competition
Short Films Award Despite the cold, people thronged the clock tower square in hundreds yesterday evening to watch the first short film festival and award winning films and documentaries.
It was not long before Bhutanese, in the habit of watching only conventional commercial movies left just as they came, in groups, leaving only a handful of audience behind.
Around thirty local and international short films were screened since Friday, out of which, seven Bhutanese films were in competition. Continue reading
